Exploring the Arctic Station: A Legacy of Research in Qeqertarsuaq
Just a kilometer outside the quaint town of Qeqertarsuaq lies Arctic Station, a gem of scientific inquiry perched next to one of the island’s renowned springs known for its crystal-clear water. For 120 years, this striking red wooden building has served as a vital hub for researchers, amassing thousands of measurements that map the intricate relationships of life on land, in water, and across the skies.
Professor Kirsten Seestern Christoffersen, a dedicated member of the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Biology, has called the station home since 1998. This year, she stepped into the role of station manager, taking the reins of an institution that has become synonymous with Arctic exploration and climate research.
“The station was established by visionary figures like botanist Morten P. Porsild and polar explorer Knud Rasmussen,” Christoffersen shares. “They recognized that true scientific research requires a constant presence. It’s not enough for researchers to come and go; to gather scientifically usable data, we need continuous and systematic measurements of everything from wind and weather to snow depth.”
At the dawn of the 20th century, Porsild outlined the station’s core mission with a striking question:
“What gives Arctic vegetation its distinctive character, and what enables these plants to thrive under conditions that would overwhelm others?”
These inquiries continue to captivate researchers from around the globe, drawing them to Qeqertarsuaq to collect samples or study the wealth of scientific reports produced by those who have previously worked at the station.
“When the station was founded in 1906, Greenland was an exotic frontier for European explorers, a largely uncharted territory,” Christoffersen recalls. “Back then, there were questions about whether northern Greenland was made up of islands or contiguous land. The allure of its whaling industry, which supplied oil for lamps in Europe, only added to its mystique.”
In recent decades, the research narrative at Arctic Station has shifted towards one of urgency: the impacts of climate change.
Leading Research on a Global Stage
Today, the station is not just a relic of past explorations; it stands as a beacon for tackling one of our most pressing global issues—climate change. Researchers come not to gaze upon photographs of bygone polar adventurers, but to confront the realities of a warming world.
The research opportunities at Arctic Station are vast, drawing scholars from diverse disciplines. Scientists explore everything from permafrost and glaciology to whale communication, the life cycles of narwhals, biological microalgae in various aquatic environments, and even the prevalence of plastics in our oceans. Continuous monitoring of meteorological conditions such as wind and precipitation plays a crucial role in developing long-term climate models.
Since its acquisition by the University of Copenhagen in 1953, Arctic Station has become a cornerstone of global research, with its data freely accessible to scholars worldwide.
“Researchers often cite our data in their scientific work,” Christoffersen notes. “The findings from Arctic Station contribute significantly to refining climate models, ultimately benefiting those most affected by climate change. Given the rapid pace of climate shifts, I believe interest in our work will only continue to grow.”
Expanding Horizons
In 2022, Arctic Station underwent renovations that expanded its capacity from 24 to 36 beds, a change prompted by the rising interest in its facilities. Each year, the station hosts between 1,600 and 2,600 overnight stays by researchers traveling from as far as Japan.
Arctic Station isn’t just a place to lay one’s head; it offers essential laboratory facilities, field equipment, and a well-stocked library featuring literature dating back to 19th-century Arctic expeditions. Moreover, the station boasts its own vessel, aptly named after founder Porsild, manned by two local sailors acquainted with the intricate waterways around Qeqertarsuaq.
