Unprecedented Ice Swimming Festival Set for Ilulissat
This weekend, the charming town of Ilulissat will host a unique event: the first-ever ice swimming festival in Greenland. Organized by the local association Siku Svøm in collaboration with Avannaata Kommunia, this exciting event is set to take place on Saturday, July 25, at the scenic Itisuarsuk, conveniently located near the Ilulissat airport.
From 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., swimming enthusiasts of all levels are invited to take part in an invigorating swim in the frigid waters, with distances of 25, 50, 100, or 250 meters available for those brave enough to dive in clad only in swimwear. The water temperature plunges below five degrees Celsius, offering a true test of endurance.
“The aim is to position Greenland as an appealing destination for ice swimming,” explained Bo Krüger, head of Siku Svøm. “We also want to raise awareness about safety in cold waters, demonstrating that one can endure longer than the commonly believed limit of 1-2 minutes.”
Highlighting the event is Danish elite swimmer Henry Stokholm, who recently achieved an impressive milestone by completing a 4-kilometer ice swim, the third longest in the world. His participation promises to add a competitive edge to what is intended to be a community celebration.
