The Unexpected Rise of Greenland as a Tourist Destination
Whether we embrace it or not, the influence of Donald Trump on Greenland’s growing popularity as a tourist hotspot is hard to ignore. Niels Pedersen, a seasoned tour guide with the Danish travel agency Nilles & Gislev Rejser, believes this phenomenon is starkly evident.
“It’s quite simple,” he remarks, reflecting on the power of media coverage. “When Greenland is in the headlines, it piques people’s curiosity. Even if the backdrop is less than cheerful, many still want to experience the allure of the country.” Niels shared these insights last month while en route from Aalborg to Nuuk, accompanied by eight eager travelers who would later meet four more companions arriving from Copenhagen.
Nilles & Gislev, traditionally known for organizing group bus tours around Europe, has recently embarked on a new adventure—introducing Greenland into their travel offerings, transforming the aircraft into their latest bus. Niels, who feels profoundly prepared for guiding tours in this breathtaking region, describes his unique qualifications with humble pride.
“I spent a year teaching at GUX in Nuuk and have been with my wife during her work assignments here. In my younger days, I even dabbled in mountaineering, which certainly adds to my experiences. However, my most significant qualification is my love for Greenland—I relish sharing my stories and knowledge with others.”
A Unique Travel Experience
Group travel is a distinct form of exploration, where participants coexist continuously, making the role of the tour guide crucial for social cohesion.
“My background in education naturally comes in handy,” Niels explains, joking about the challenge of keeping a group dynamic similar to a classroom environment. His commitment to the job is clear; solitude is a luxury he seldom enjoys while traveling.
“The guide is central to the success of a group trip,” assert Elsebeth and Per Faurholt Jensen, a couple from Frederikshavn who have frequently traveled with Nilles & Gislev. “We’ve explored most corners of Europe with them, from sunny river cruises to the rugged landscapes of Svalbard.”
They shared a humorous recollection of just one hiccup during a trip, where an unfortunate oversight by their tour guide—a bit too much indulgence in refreshments—prompted an apology from the company’s director before they even returned home.
The Significance of Community
“The guide truly is the linchpin for travelers like us. We’re curious and eager to learn, but there’s something equally valuable about forging connections with fellow travelers. That’s where the guide really shines; they hold the group together,” they note, reminiscing on friendships fostered during their journeys.
“In fact, Nilles & Gislev excels at this. During bus trips, we often find ourselves sharing meals at makeshift tables beside the bus rather than dining in restaurants. The tour guide often doubles as both chef and server, effortlessly engaging with us, sometimes even entertaining us in the evenings. A good sense of humor is essential for a tour guide,” they add with a smile.
As they reflect on their week in Greenland, the Faurholt Jensens credit much of their positive experience to Niels. “He’s an excellent guide we wholeheartedly recommend.”
Though Nilles & Gislev now features Greenland in their itinerary, they work with Ruby Rejser, an established player in Greenland’s tourism industry. Similar to many agencies, they outsource their packages, which encompass transport, accommodations, excursions, and dining experiences.
Ruby Rejser’s Strong Beginning
Ruby Rejser made significant inroads in the Greenlandic market last year, arranging direct flights between Aalborg and Nuuk and crafting travel packages that include four days in Nuuk, complete with a 24-hour glamping experience, followed by three days in Ilulissat featuring ice fjord excursions.
Despite last week’s trip to Ilulissat being canceled due to inclement weather, the Faurholt Jensens remained unfazed. “It didn’t matter. We felt safe in Niels’ capable hands. He quickly devised an alternative itinerary,” they expressed while heading home.
“Never once did we feel disappointed. We may very well return, and it will undoubtedly be with Nilles & Gislev, as they truly understand the essence of group travel.”
In a world where travel can shift as fast as the wind over Greenland’s fjords, it’s the stories and connections that remain etched in our hearts long after the journey ends.
