Handball: GSS Greenland champions will play against North American champions

GSS men, who have won the handball GM 15 years in a row, are now looking for international challenges.

The intensity of training for GSS men’s handball has increased after the GM triumph in Ilulissat, where the club from Nuuk won the title for 15 years in a row.

They are training hard to beat North American and Caribbean national champions and thus qualify for the IHF Mens Super Globe Club World Championship.

– Since 2020, we have received an invitation to participate in the qualifying tournament for the Club World Cup. But we have not participated so far due to high travel costs. Now there will be a direct flight from Nuuk to America, which makes it easier for us to participate, says chairman of GSS handball and key player Nuka Bilo Heilmann to KNR.

The plan was for the tournament to be held in New York, which will have direct flights to Nuuk this summer.

– But now the tournament has moved to Las Vegas, which means we have to spend even more money on travel costs. But we have been training seriously and did not want to stop now that we have reached this far in the preparations, says Nuka Bilo Heilmann.

GSS is now seeking sponsorships to participate in North America and the Caribbean’s answer to the Champions League in handball.

The winners of that tournament advance to the IHF Mens Super Globe Club World Championship.

– We have watched video of participants in the North American qualifier. As far as we can see, we can beat them all if we play to our best, says Nuka Bilo Heilmann.

The qualifying tournament, which was played for the first time in 2019, has so far featured participation from clubs from the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico.
