Since January 2025, uninvited guests have been registered on average once a month at Munck’s construction site at the airport construction site in Ilulissat. A clear increase compared to previous years, project manager at Munck Civil Engineering A/S, Daniel Jørgensen, tells Sermitsiaq:
– During the construction period, some small equipment and tools have disappeared, but in recent months it has been of a different nature, he says.
– The thefts include two company cars, an ATV, telescopic handler, rubber goat, food for employees and most recently a dump truck that drove over a cliff. In addition to this, the “guests” have also twice come to the construction site in vehicles that had been stolen in the city.
Requires a lot of time
The thefts don’t just have financial consequences. The time spent reporting and handling the cases takes away from the construction project itself. And the wait for new equipment can delay schedules.
– The consequences of this are wide-ranging. Of course, there are financial matters that need to be clarified with insurance, etc., and internal resources must be allocated to handling these cases.
– Resources we would rather see spent on the project. In addition, these episodes can also have time consequences for our projects, as replacing equipment can take a long time, says Daniel Jørgensen to Sermitsiaq.
