The citizens of Maniitsoq may have felt tremors on Thursday morning. There have been four earthquakes 45 kilometers from the city. But earthquakes are completely normal, GEUS assures.

This morning at 10:50 AM, shaking began in Maniitsoq. The cause is an earthquake 45 kilometers from the city.

The earthquake was measured at 3.3 on the Richter scale, and in a global context it is a small earthquake, but on a Greenlandic scale it is a slightly larger one, says senior researcher at GEUS Trine Dahl-Jensen.

    – Earthquakes and aftershocks, which have also occurred in Maniitsoq, are very common because the tectonic plates are constantly shifting, says Trine Dahl-Jensen.

    An experience

Therefore, there is no reason to be nervous about either the first earthquake or the three subsequent aftershocks, emphasizes Trine Dahl-Jensen.

    – An earthquake is an experience when it is not more violent, and in the registered earthquakes, no one has been injured.

The three aftershocks were registered at 10:53, 11:15 and 11:20, says the senior researcher.
