It is the day before the United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 with space for 166 passengers arrives in Nuuk, and celebrations await the passengers at the airport.

United Airlines’ global network planning team selects new routes and destinations for the American airline based on data, social media trends, and consumer behavior, which led them to choose to open seasonal routes to Nuuk from June 14 or to Uulanbataar in Mongolia, which opened on May 1.

“The planning team is looking for destinations outside of the well-known routes by analyzing long-term trends, trends from social media, credit card data, pop culture, and the company wants to position itself as the first American airline to fly to Greenland,” Patrick Quayle, United Airlines’ vice president of global network planning and alliances, told the Wall Street Journal last week, speaking about selecting new routes for the airline.

In October 2024, Air Greenland and United Airlines announced that the route between Newark (New York) and Nuuk will open in June, with Boeing 737 MAX 8s with seating for 166 passengers operating two weekly flights between Nuuk and New York until September 24.

An “Oscar” for the sexiest route to Nuuk

The Cranky Network Awards is an annual award ceremony held to recognize and celebrate the best in aviation in network development, commercial planning and service development. The awards are presented by the blog Cranky Flier and celebrate everything from new routes to airline reviews.

“The Cranky Network Awards are the airline industry’s answer to the Oscars and celebrate the achievements of network planning and the people who create the global route networks we all depend on, congratulations to the United Airlines network team on winning 4 awards,” Patrick Quayle wrote on his LinkedIn profile in early 2025, where the airline had received the award for “sexiest new route, short haul for the route to Nuuk, Greenland.”

In addition, they have received awards for best new destination for the Bilbao, Spain route, Route Victory for San Francisco to Rome, and Most Improved Network, which is the main prize.

    Celebrations in Nuuk

A festive welcome has been arranged for the first United Airlines flight, which will land at 18:45 at Nuuk Airport, where welcoming speeches will be given by representatives from United Airlines and Greenland Airports. With participation from partners, members of Naalakkersuisut and many more.
