Many of them will be in the field this summer, surveying, drilling, measuring and exploring in their license area.

    Orientation on activities

Minerals companies with a permit for preliminary exploration or exploration must inform the Danish Mineral Resources Agency of the activities they plan in their license area by May 1st each year.

The vast majority of activities require separate approval.

In addition, research groups and others with permission to conduct scientific research must also apply for approval of their field activities.

    62 applications

The status for the 2025 season is that the Norwegian Mineral Resources Agency has received 62 applications for field activities. The vast majority of the activities will take place in Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, where 27 applications for field activities have been registered.

Kujalleq Municipality has received 19 applications, Qeqqata Municipality 10, Avannaata Municipality 9 and there is a single application for activities in Qeqertalik and in the National Park. Some activities cross municipal borders, and in these cases the activity is counted in both municipalities. This is stated in a press release from the Norwegian Mineral Resources Agency.

    Hearing and response

This is a snapshot of applications, as some companies also apply later in the year.

When the Mineral Resources Authority has received an application for field activity, the application material is sent to a hearing with relevant authorities, including the municipality concerned. The hearing usually lasts three weeks. Responses to the hearing are forwarded to the applicant. Based on the application material, the received response to the hearing and the applicant’s response to the response to the hearing, the Mineral Resources Authority then makes a decision to approve or reject the application for field activity. All approved field activities are published in the Mineral Brochure, which will be published during July 2025.

In 2024, the Danish Mineral Resources Agency had received 35 applications for field activities. In 2023, there were 31 applications for field activities.
