The Hotel Kulusuk in East Greenland will close its doors on September 30, as announced by director Mike Nicolaisen in a recent press release.

In his statement, Nicolaisen explained, “We are discontinuing regular operations outside of the season due to current transportation conditions, which, in our assessment, no longer support year-round viability.” However, the hotel will remain open during the heli-skiing season and will welcome guests again starting June 1 of next year, when direct flights from Iceland resume.

This decision means that hotel employees will be temporarily furloughed during the off-season.

    Challenges with Transportation Connections

Since opening in 1998, Hotel Kulusuk has been a cornerstone of tourism in East Greenland. Yet, the reality now is that it will no longer operate year-round. “This is a decision we make with great regret,” Nicolaisen remarked. “For many years, Hotel Kulusuk has played a vital role in the region’s tourism landscape.”

He emphasized that stable transportation links are essential for maintaining year-round hotel operations. Despite the current setback, Nicolaisen holds out hope for a future where the hotel can resume full-year operations. He advocates for increased focus on improving the tourism infrastructure in East Greenland. “We are optimistic that better conditions for tourism will be established, allowing us to offer year-round services and retain our staff throughout the year,” he noted.
