A Musical Icon in Greenland: Remembering Pele Møller
Pele Møller, a towering figure in Greenland’s jazz scene, passed away on Monday evening in Nuuk, as confirmed by his family. His remarkable influence on the local music community, particularly as a jazz guitarist, will remain etched in the hearts of many.
Møller’s talent was undeniable; he mesmerized audiences with his fingers effortlessly gliding over the fretboard, crafting melodies that seemed to flow as naturally as breath. Yet, his passion for music didn’t end with performance. He dedicated much of his life to nurturing aspiring guitarists, teaching in evening schools and offering guidance to those eager to learn.
Born in 1939 in the small town of Qullissat, Pele Møller’s musical journey began amidst a vibrant cultural landscape. During his formative years in the 1950s and 60s, Qullissat boasted a thriving music scene, largely fueled by the celebrated Vajgat Orchestra. His musical aspirations took flight as he joined this very orchestra, sharing the stage with talented musicians who inspired him, including Jens Hendriksen and Pele Lange, his mentor and fellow guitarist.
A Journey of Growth
Møller’s quest for knowledge led him to Denmark, where he expanded not only his musical skills but also his horizons. It was in this new environment, often by serendipity, that he found himself collaborating with skilled jazz musicians who appreciated his unique sound.
Even after the coal mining town of Qullissat ceased operations in 1972, Møller maintained a deep connection to his roots. In 1988, he took the initiative to reunite the Vajgat Orchestra for a special performance in his hometown. This endeavor culminated in the recording of a music video and the album Qullissani Naapeqkinneq at Ulo’s studio, effectively capturing a critical chapter in Greenland’s musical history.
Throughout his career, Møller also formed the Pele Møller Band, which saw numerous lineups over the years. His collaborations with Ulo led to several album releases, and his performances earned him a place on stage at important events across Greenland.
Pele Møller passed away after a lengthy illness, leaving behind a legacy rich with musical contributions, numerous recordings, and unforgettable television appearances. His profound impact on Greenland’s music scene will not be forgotten.
