Greenland Sports Confederation Cancels Football Championship Due to Low Registrations
In accordance with the regulations set by the Greenland Sports Confederation, a minimum of four teams is required to hold the General Meeting (GM) for the annual football tournament. Unfortunately, this year, the anticipated event for old boys’ football has been called off due to a disappointing number of registrations.
“It’s a real shame because we were all looking forward to it,” lamented Josef Petersen, the event organizer from the N-85 club in Narsaq. The championship, originally scheduled from July 13 to July 18, will no longer take place this season.
Financial Constraints and Player Shortages
Many sports clubs have cited inadequate financial resources and a lack of participants as the primary reasons for not registering. Kugsak 45, based in Qasigiannguit, is one such club. “It’s too expensive to travel,” explained Maasi Lange Gabrielsen, who oversees the old boys’ football program there.
The sentiment echoed from Disko 76, where Jens Mølgaard expressed frustration over their inability to participate: “It’s simply because nobody wants to; we can’t afford it.”
According to the pricing information provided by Arctic Umiaq Line, a round trip from Qasigiannguit to Narsaq would cost an eye-watering DKK 7,550 for just one person.
Yet finances are not the only hurdle. Kim Jakobsen Jensen, a coach with Nagtoralik Paamiut, pointed out another fundamental issue: the teams are struggling with dwindling player counts.
As these obstacles mount, the dream of this year’s football championship fades, leaving organizers and players alike to hope for better circumstances in the future.
