Mixed Messages in the Greenland Oil Debate: Mayor Calls for Clarity

Avaaraq Olsen, the mayor of Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, has expressed deep concern over the contrasting messages being conveyed by Robert Price, director of the American company Greenland Energy Company. Speaking to KNR, Olsen emphasized the need for transparency, particularly regarding how Price’s statements may differ for audiences in Greenland versus those in the United States.

“I truly hope that people beyond our borders recognize the discrepancies in the narratives being shared,” Olsen stated. “What is communicated to our citizens often diverges sharply from what is told to American audiences, and it’s crucial that this issue receives the attention it deserves.”

These concerns were brought to the forefront following a recent video podcast featuring Price, alongside television personality Dr. Phil, where he made a series of controversial claims—claims that KNR has since sought to fact-check. In response to the muddled messaging, Olsen sent an open letter to Price earlier this week, urging him to clarify his dual presentations to both American and Greenlandic communities.

During a civic meeting in Ittoqqortoormiit, Price appeared uneasy, sticking closely to his facts but becoming evasive when pressed by reporters. This contrasts sharply with his confident demeanor in U.S. interviews, where he has made statements that Múte B. Egede, Greenland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Raw Materials, has labeled as factually inaccurate.

Olsen’s letter poignantly addresses these inconsistencies: “You spoke with confidence, certainty, and enthusiasm. Yet, when standing before the very community affected by your intended exploration, the message shifted dramatically,” she noted. “You cannot expect trust when your narrative changes based on your audience.”

    Advocating for Honest Engagement

The mayor has been attentive to the worries raised by Ittoqqortoormiit’s residents, many of whom have expressed feelings of manipulation and distrust directed at Price. In her letter, Olsen asks a pertinent question: “Who are you misleading, Mr. Price? The people of Greenland, or your audience in the United States?”

Her aim in penning the letter is to advocate for respectful and honest treatment of citizens in Ittoqqortoormiit. “It’s about demanding that our residents are treated with integrity, regardless of who the stakeholders are,” she explained. “The community deserves to know if they are being misled, and we must make it clear that misinformation is unacceptable.”

    Navigating Limited Authority

Despite her strong stance, Olsen recognizes her limitations as mayor, explaining that the final say rests with the Department for Business and Raw Materials, which oversees communications with Greenland Energy Company. Nevertheless, she remains committed to monitoring the situation closely.

“We have a duty to ensure that all processes are carried out correctly, even if the responsibility does not directly lie with the municipality,” Olsen asserted. “We must protect our citizens by scrutinizing the process and advocating for their involvement.”

    Different Strokes for Different Folks

In January, Malene Vahl Rasmussen, mayor of the Municipality of Kujalleq, similarly addressed concerns directly to former President Donald Trump over the use of military force regarding Greenland. She made it clear that any mining operations must be executed with the utmost respect for Greenlandic law and its people.

When asked if she would consider a similar approach of distancing Kommuneqarf Sermersooq from American interests, Olsen clarified, “Our situation differs significantly from that of Kujalleq. We have no current cooperation with American entities regarding this matter, and our processes are entirely distinct.”

As these discussions unfold, it remains clear that the path forward hinges on fostering a transparent dialogue that respects the voices of those grounded in the very regions affected by these large-scale ventures.
