The escalating tensions at the Thailand-Cambodia border have prompted a significant shift in travel advisories from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who now urge travelers to exercise caution when considering trips to these neighboring nations.

Ole Larsen, a native of Greenland now residing in eastern Thailand, has been observing the border conflict with increasing concern. Living just 16 kilometers from the border, he has felt the impact of the dispute firsthand.

“In the beginning, it was incredibly stressful,” Larsen reflects. “This is my first experience with such a situation. There was a flare-up in July, but it was fleeting. This time, however, the stakes are much higher, and the messages we’re receiving are more alarming.”

The long-standing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia traces its roots back to the 1950s, spurred by disputes over territorial ownership following Cambodia’s independence. The Buddhist temple Preah Vihear, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lies at the center of this ongoing discord, contributing to the recent escalation in hostilities.

Despite the turmoil, Larsen notes a strange sense of resignation among locals. “There’s still fighting, and we can hear it clearly, but I’d say we’ve grown somewhat calmer—if such a thing is possible. The explosions, while alarming, haven’t come as close as they did in the first week of renewed conflict.”

Indeed, the atmosphere has been fraught. Larsen describes the unsettling spectacle of the skies lighting up with bursts of artillery fire, the ground occasionally trembling beneath him. “Every time it happens, it’s jarring,” he admits.

Amidst the unrest, many residents in the vicinity have fled their homes in search of safety, though some have begun to trickle back. “Most people have left, but a few have returned—some simply grew weary of living in emergency shelters for nearly ten days.”

When asked whether he feels afraid residing so close to the action, Larsen’s response is revealing: “We’re not afraid, because we have an escape plan if necessary.” His calmness seems to contrast sharply with the chaos surrounding him, reflecting a resilience that many in the region are forced to embrace.
