Qaqortoq Airport Ready for International Flights
The Swedish Transport Agency has granted Qaqortoq Airport the green light to handle international air traffic, following a thorough safety inspection.
Previously, this South Greenland facility, which officially opened on April 16, was limited to operations involving Air Greenland. However, the recent evaluation confirmed that Qaqortoq Airport has reached the necessary standards to accommodate international flights.
Lars Korsholm, deputy director of the Swedish Transport Agency, expressed confidence in the airport’s capabilities. “We have reviewed the security protocols at Qaqortoq Airport and can confirm that Greenland Airports now possesses the requisite operational experience and security measures to facilitate international flights, including those of Icelandair,” he stated. He emphasized that both the security checkpoints and on-field operations align with established safety requirements.
As a result of this upgraded status, Icelandair is set to launch its service between Qaqortoq and Keflavik starting today, Thursday, June 4. An earlier flight planned for June 2 was cancelled, as confirmed by Flightradar24.
Last year, Icelandair announced plans for four weekly flights during the summer months, tapering to twice weekly in September. Prior to the commencement of operations at Qaqortoq Airport, the airline serviced Narsarsuaq Airport, which has since ceased operations following the new airport’s opening.
This development heralds a promising new chapter for both travel and business in the region, as international connectivity increases and accessibility to Greenland improves.
