Handball: Undisputed victors are betting on the Club World Cup
GSS, who have been the undisputed Greenlandic champions in handball for the past 15 years, are now aiming to participate in a qualifying round for the Club World Championship. The qualifying round will be held in Las Vegas in early July.
The undisputed victors in handball in Greenland, GSS, are now aiming to participate in a qualifying round for the Club World Cup this year.
The undisputed victorsAnnouncement
GSS reports this on its own Facebook page, where the club is looking for companies and private individuals who may be interested in being sponsors for the team.
Clubs can participate in the qualifying rounds for the Club World Cup once they have won the championship in their respective country.
– We have considered participating in the qualifying rounds for the Club World Cup since 2020. But it is only now that we can see a more coherent and easier journey to the destination, which gives us better opportunities to seek challenges outside Greenland’s borders, chairman of the handball club GSS, Nuka Bilo Heilmann, tells Sermitsiaq.
GSS has previously received an invitation to the qualifying rounds, but has had to decline in recent years. With the opening of the new airport and better routes abroad, it has become easier for GSS to travel to North America to participate in the NACHC tournament on July 4-8.
Ready for battle
GSS’s men are Greenlandic champions for the 15th year in a row and were thus able to bring home the gold medals again in May. Since then, the club has quickly planned to participate in the qualifying rounds, which will take place in Las Vegas. Here, GSS expects to meet around 6-8 teams, including champions from Canada, the USA and the Caribbean islands:
– We have been following the previous years’ tournaments to keep up with the other teams’ developments, and we definitely believe that we can challenge them. If we can come with good energy and have really good days on the field, then I am sure that we can take home the gold, says Nuka Bilo Heilmann without hesitation.
The winner of the qualifying tournament in North America will secure a ticket to the Club World Cup, which will be held in Cairo, Egypt this fall.
Looking for sponsors
It has not been easy to find funds that have the right application deadlines for GSS to secure enough funds to send its team to Las Vegas this summer.
Therefore, the club has started looking for sponsors – from private individuals to companies – to secure enough funds for travel and accommodation for GSS.
– We welcome all financial support, regardless of the amount. There is no such thing as too small an amount if you want to support the sport. By supporting, the sponsors will help to market Greenland, and we can represent Greenland and all the sponsors by participating in the tournaments, says Nuka Bilo Heilmann.
