Trump inaugurates new immigration center surrounded by alligators
The center is intended to house illegal migrants before they are deported, and is located in a wetland in Florida filled with pythons and alligators.
Donald Trump is participating today in the inauguration of a new deportation center in the Everglades in Florida, which has been nicknamed ‘Alligator Alcatraz’.
Several media outlets are reporting this. Among others, TV2.dk and CNN.
The center can house up to 5,000 migrants before they are deported from the country. It is also located at a small, deserted airfield surrounded by swamps, where alligators live, among other things. Hence the name ‘Alligator Alcatraz’.
In addition to the reptile, the name of the deportation center also refers to one of the world’s most notorious prisons. On the island of Alcatraz, located outside San Francisco, the prison housed several famous prisoners from 1934 to 1963. Among them was the gangster Al Capone.
The new detention center is part of the Trump administration’s tough migration policy and Donald Trump’s goal to deport all foreigners who are illegally in the United States.
The president’s plan is to increase the current capacity for detained migrants from 41,000 to 100,000 places, writes TV2.dk.
According to TV2.dk, the deportation center has received mixed reception. Proponents see it as a model for a stricter course in the immigration field, while critics see it as an inhumane temporary prison camp.
