True to Tradition
Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq came alive in celebration for its cherished annual Sports Day. In 2026, Inussivik became the heart of this memorable event, where the atmosphere was infused with joy and camaraderie. The hall was beautifully adorned, dim lighting casting a warm glow on a festively decorated stage at the center. Athletes, coaches, and volunteers gathered around long tables laden with sweet cakes and steaming coffee, embodying the spirit of the occasion.
A palpable sense of joy enveloped the hall, enhanced by the cheers from a packed audience arrived to witness the grand festivities. Children’s laughter echoed from the corners, their playful antics contributing to the vibrant ambiance only a sports hall can conjure.
A Tribute to All
As the energy soared, it became evident that Sports Day was more than just an awards ceremony celebrating top nominees. As Mayor Avaaraq Olsen noted in her opening address, “Let’s celebrate this year’s winners, but also everyone else.” Her pride resonated in her closing remark: “Nuuk is truly a sports town.”
Laali Berthelsen, this year’s enthusiastic host, articulated her passion for the event’s significance—from a professional and personal perspective. “Sports Day has always been a big day for me. I remember eagerly anticipating it as a child. It’s an event that unites the whole municipality,” she said with a smile.
This celebration, honoring not only the stars of the field but the unsung heroes behind the scenes, highlighted the essence of community spirit. “It means a lot for children, youth, and adults alike to come together. It reinforces our commitment to being a healthy, thriving community,” Laali added, her pride evident as she embraced the joy of the occasion.
Talent of the Year
The day witnessed the handing out of six prestigious awards, beginning with one of the most coveted: Talent of the Year. Laali Berthelsen read out the nominees, her warm words underscoring their exceptional achievements.
When Poul Petersen from Demokraatit took to the stage to announce the winner, a hush fell over the crowd. The tension was palpable until the name of young Taekwon-Do prodigy Angutinguaq Nielsen echoed through the hall.
“It feels wonderful to be named Talent of the Year,” Angutinguaq expressed humbly, stepping down from the stage, a radiant smile lighting up his face. “When my name was called, I was genuinely surprised. There are so many talented individuals competing, so I didn’t expect to find myself among them.”
With newfound confidence bolstered by this recognition, Angutinguaq has set his sights high. “I want to win gold at the European Championships,” he declared, his determination clear.
His father and coach, Louis Nielsen, shares this dream. “It’s a big but entirely realistic aspiration. We take it one step at a time. Angutinguaq is just 18, which is quite young for elite sports. If it doesn’t happen this year, there’s always the next. We’ll put in our utmost effort for all upcoming competitions,” he said, embodying a calm and optimistic spirit.
Despite focusing on future goals, Angutinguaq savored the moment and the acknowledgment of their hard work. “In my eyes, he was the right winner. It’s well-deserved, and I couldn’t be prouder,” Louis remarked, emotion tinging his voice.
The Heart of Sport Beats in Nuuk
As awards were presented, the atmosphere remained buoyant. SigU and Rene Brandt kept spirits high with live music as the audience enjoyed cake, coffee, and fruit. Laali Berthelsen even got everyone on their feet for a round of squats, emphasizing the day’s athletic spirit.
Several deserving accolades were awarded that day: Coach of the Year went to the dedicated team from NS-84, while Enok Petersen from Siggarta received the title of Manager of the Year. The Team of the Year award recognized Qeersaat – utoqqaat timersortartut (older sports), and dedicated volunteer Ane Marie Knudsen was honored with the Encouragement Award. Sportswoman of the Year was awarded to Maria Grødem, who achieved remarkable feats in Crossfit, placing second at the European Championships and third at the World Championships in Functional Fitness.
Each award celebrated not only the individuals but also their collective effort to elevate sports within Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, fostering a thriving community through their commitment. This year’s Sports Day was a heartfelt tribute to both personal achievements and the community that stands behind them, an experience woven together through every handshake, high-five, and shared squat.
As the day unfolded, filled with smiles, pride, and enthusiastic participation, one thing remained clear: sports are not merely about titles or trophies. They are deeply embedded in the hearts of everyone involved, their light shining far beyond the confines of the hall.
