Elite Sport Greenland Charts New Course for 2026-2029

In a significant move towards shaping the future of competitive athletics, Elite Sport Greenland has unveiled its ambitious strategy for the years 2026 to 2029. This comprehensive plan aims to foster a more focused, transparent, and sustainable development of elite sports in Greenland, all with the goal of enhancing the international competitiveness of Greenlandic athletes.

The vision lays a foundation for Greenland to emerge as a formidable player in the world of elite sports, where athletes won’t just participate, but will actively vie for top honors on the international stage. According to Elite Sport Greenland, the strategy seeks to unify the entire sports ecosystem—from budding talents and seasoned coaches to organizational structures and training facilities—around a common goal.

“This strategy represents a significant and necessary step towards elevating Greenlandic elite sports,” stated CEO Angutinnguaq Hegelund-Tittussen in an interview with Sermitsiaq.

    Three Pillars of Development

At the heart of this new strategy are three essential pillars. The first aims to enhance the existing elite sports framework through a tiered support system that promotes transparency and accountability. This will involve systematic assessments of both athletic performance and the enjoyment derived from participating in sports.

The second pillar is dedicated to fostering stronger pathways from talent identification to elite competition. This includes elevating coaching programs to match international standards and transforming the Knowledge Center for Elite Sports into a national center of expertise.

Finally, the third pillar emphasizes the need for improved conditions surrounding elite sports, highlighting the importance of financial support, greater visibility, and active involvement in discussions about facilities and training environments, in partnership with organizations like the Greenland Sports Association.

“With this strategy, we take responsibility for the future,” Hegelund-Tittussen asserted.

    A Collective Effort

A crucial aspect of the strategy is its ambition for broader national engagement. Elite Sport Greenland aims to elevate the visibility of elite athletes as inspirational role models while ensuring that talent and coaching development reach all corners of the country.

The organization believes that the successes in elite sports should serve to foster community spirit, commitment, and national pride—not just within the larger cities, but throughout Greenland.

“We have established a clear and ambitious direction that will strengthen athletes, coaches, sports associations, and the organization as a whole,” Hegelund-Tittussen emphasized. “At the same time, we aim to unite the nation around the vision of becoming a robust elite sports nation. With this strategy, we are taking responsibility for the future.”

    Looking Beyond Borders

The strategy also shines a spotlight on Greenland’s potential on the international stage. With the introduction of structured support, well-trained coaches, and an enhanced organizational structure, the hope is that athletes will be better equipped to compete and excel globally.

“We are investing in people, environments, and communities,” Hegelund-Tittussen remarked. “We firmly believe that Greenlandic athletes can reach the pinnacle of their sport when we work collaboratively, with purpose and long-term vision.”

This strategy will be operationalized through annual action plans, ensuring that ambitious goals translate into tangible outcomes—both in training facilities and on the competition circuit—in the years to come.
