If the project is to become a reality faster, there is hope that the Self-Government will contribute financially.

The number of elderly people is increasing. This also applies to Uummannaq.

The municipal council of Avannaata Municipality discussed the construction of a new building for the elderly in Uummannaq on Wednesday. The proposal for a new retirement home was approved. The proposer was Sakio Fleischer from Siumut.

He stated the following to the municipal council in connection with the proposal:

    – Since I can see that the need for housing is growing, I have therefore proposed that a new retirement home be built in Uummannaq, said Sakio Fleischer.

    More on waiting list

According to the presentation given during the meeting, there are around 40 people on the waiting list for places in the retirement homes in Avannaata Municipality. In Uummannaq, there were twelve people on the waiting list at the beginning of the year. In addition, Avannaata Municipality states that there are also elderly people in the settlements in Uummannaq Fjord who are waiting for a place.

However, the financing of the new retirement home is not yet fully secured. According to an assessment from the technical committee of Avannaata Municipality, the construction will cost 60 million kroner. An application for 30 million kroner – half of the estimated costs – must be made to the Self-Government.

Therefore, it is still uncertain whether the retirement home can become a reality.

How big the building will be and how many elderly people there will be room for are not mentioned in the agenda material from the meeting.
