A Night of Celebration Amidst Challenges: Nuuk’s Pub Quiz Takes Center Stage

Some have an aversion to exams; for others, the thrill is irresistible. This sentiment rang true in Nuuk’s vibrant nightlife last month as students donned their graduation caps and ventured out to celebrate.

On that Thursday evening, the atmosphere at Daddy’s pub was electric. The air buzzed with excitement as recent graduates, buoyed by their exam results, flocked to this beloved local spot. Here, amidst laughter and cheers, the pub organized its weekly tradition: a spirited pub quiz.

The format is simple yet engaging. Teams, comprising up to eight members, line up to tackle a barrage of questions for a chance to win a bottle of spirits, exclusively to be enjoyed at Daddy’s. The dynamic quizmaster for the night, Inuk Stender Jensen, was not only the architect of the challenging questions but also the one to announce winners and distribute prizes.

    The Warm-Up Ritual

As the clock struck 8 p.m., the buzz of conversation grew as contestants arrived early, kicking off the night with a round or two of draft beer. Each team huddled together, focused and ready, tackling the questions displayed in print. A hush fell over the room during the rounds, but with every round completed, laughter and banter erupted once again.

With Greenland’s National Day approaching, the quiz theme spotlighted the rich tapestry of the nation. Participants faced four rounds, each containing ten thought-provoking questions, covering topics ranging from politics and culture to the stunning natural beauty of Greenland. The excitement peaked during the final music round, where teams had to guess song titles, artists, and their release years.

An hour and 40 questions later, Inuk sat down to tally the scores and announce the champions of the evening.

Remarkably, the team “No Pizza Here” emerged victorious. Consisting of seasoned quiz aficionados, they boasted experience from previous challenges.

“We won the annual championship in 2024,” shared team member Milo Gudmundur. “We even have team shirts that serve as a badge of pride. Our name originates from our Discord server where we often play games like Counterstrike.”

With a steady group supporting them, they revel in the thrill of competition, typically fielding between 10 to 12 participants, split into smaller teams to adhere to the quiz’s maximum of eight members per group.

    The Quest for Glory

Milo elaborated on their motivations: “Make no mistake, we’re here to win—not just for the sake of victory, but for that beloved bottle of spirits to enjoy later, whether that night or over the weekend.”

In recent years, pub quizzes have proliferated globally, tracing back to their roots in England, where the spirit of camaraderie—and sometimes heated rivalry—thrives.

Recalling a past episode of Barnaby, where the intensity of a pub quiz culminated in chaos, it seems Nuuk has yet to reach such dramatic extremes. Here, the focus remains on fun and friendly competition.

“We also relish the challenge and the playful rivalry we share with other teams. The thrill of outsmarting a rival team is, without doubt, a significant motivator,” Milo added with a grin.

As the night progressed, laughter and friendly taunts filled the air, painting a picture of a community united by the joy of knowledge and spirited competition. In this corner of Greenland, exams may come and go, but the heartwarming bonds formed over quizzes are sure to last a lifetime.
