Five Athletes Set to Represent Greenland with Aspirations of New Medals After Last Year’s Triumph

Inukkuluk G. Lennert made waves last year at the King of Taekwon-Do International Championship in Thessaloniki, Greece, where he earned a commendable bronze medal in the senior tul category. This year, he returns to the stage, joined by four fellow taekwondo practitioners, as they compete in the European Championships.

The Greenland contingent has landed in Crete, excited to take part in the prestigious event running from Tuesday to Saturday. Their diligent preparations have been extensive, particularly benefiting from a recent joint training session organized by the Greenland Taekwon-Do Federation, as noted in a press release.

This year’s team comprises five athletes, competing in disciplines of both tul and freestyle. In addition to Lennert, Angutinguaq J. Nielsen will also compete in the seniors’ tul category. Junior competitor Arnaaluk Frederiksen will showcase her skills in the junior division, while Maasi Davidsen gears up for the freestyle competition in the under 78-kilogram weight class. Lastly, Lars Lennert Abelsen enters the ring in the tul division for athletes over 35.

Building on last year’s success, where the team clinched two bronze medals through Angutinguaq Nielsen and Lars Lennert Abelsen, hopes are running high for another strong performance this year.

New Rules May Shape the Competition

National coach Louis Nielsen has indicated that the athletes have focused their preparations on adapting to the championship’s international standards.

“The athletes have trained rigorously for the EC, spending the past six months refining their techniques and preparing for the competitive environment,” Nielsen remarked, indicating a high level of readiness. “With the introduction of new competition rules this year, it will be fascinating to see how the matches unfold. However, there is no doubt our athletes will strive to represent Greenland to the best of their abilities.”

While the competitions take center stage, Vivi G. Lennert, chair of the Greenland Taekwon-Do Federation, will also participate in the European federation’s general meeting.

Both the senior and junior national teams owe their support to Elite Sport Greenland, reflecting a commitment to fostering talent and excellence in this vibrant sporting discipline.
