Last week, Aasiaat played host to the U-15 championship for both girls and boys. Over the next few weeks, Kalaallit Arsaattartut Kattuffiat (KAK) will oversee a series of Greenlandic championships across various age groups nationwide.
Kalaallit Arsaattartut Kattuffiat (KAK) has officially launched this year’s outdoor football championships in Greenland. The week commenced with the U-15 championship for boys and girls held in Aasiaat, organized by T-41.
These tournaments for the Greenlandic football championship will unfold in various locations throughout the country, catering to both young athletes and adults.
To bolster participation in the women’s championship, KAK is exploring the possibility of forming a joint team from Nuuk’s clubs.
This year’s Greenland championships will culminate with the men’s tournament, scheduled from August 3 to 9.
U-15 Championship Kicks Off
The inaugural matches of this year’s outdoor championships took place in Aasiaat, with T-41 at the helm of organization.
– The U-15 tournament began on July 7 in Aasiaat to mark the launch of the Greenlandic championships in outdoor football, as stated by KAK Chairman Kenneth Kleist.
Securing the Women’s Tournament
For the women’s Greenland Championship to proceed, a minimum of four teams must be registered. This requirement has posed challenges in recent years, particularly in the women’s categories.
Consequently, KAK is currently investigating the feasibility of having clubs from Nuuk assemble a united city team for tournament participation.
– Our concept of a city team needs to be discussed within KAK, and then the tournament committee will look into the possibility of female players from various clubs coming together. We aim for NÛK, GSS, and B-67 to compete as a unified Nuuk squad, Kleist explained.
KAK emphasizes the significance of enabling female players to participate in the Greenland Championship, not only for the growth of women’s football but also to enhance the national team’s prospects.
– It is essential for all women who aspire to play at the national level to showcase their talent at the championship. This will allow national coach Danny Jung to gauge their skills accurately, Kleist added.
Looking ahead, the women’s national team is gearing up for training matches in the Faroe Islands and participation in next year’s Island Games.
Men’s Championship on the Horizon
The men’s championship is set to take place in Maniitsoq from August 3 to 9. Prior to this final round, teams will engage in regional qualifying tournaments to secure their spots in the championship.
KAK is also eager to enhance men’s football by fostering more tournaments and encouraging participation from clubs in villages and smaller towns.
– The board is keen to see clubs from rural areas re-engage with the competition. We’ll also deliberate whether a requirement for local tournament participation should be instituted moving forward, Kleist remarked.
The Role of Volunteers
The success of the Greenland Championships largely hinges on the dedication of volunteers from local sports associations. KAK reports that the host clubs appear to have secured the necessary manpower for organization.
– We anticipate that the clubs applying to host the Greenland Championships will have sufficient volunteers on hand, Kleist noted.
KAK is committed to supporting the organizing clubs throughout the process.
– We are here to guide you, and we hope that your experience will be positive, filled with memorable football matches, Kleist concluded.
