Inflatable Dome Proposed for Ilulissat’s Soccer Field
In a move that could redefine sports and community activities in Ilulissat, Mayor Lars Erik Gabrielsen of Avannaata Kommunia is advocating for an inflatable, heated dome to cover the local soccer field. This ambitious proposal aims to extend the playing season all year round, addressing a pressing need for improved sports facilities in the region.
Gabrielsen anticipates that the municipal council will reach a decision on this initiative during its upcoming meeting on June 26. He emphasized the existing shortcomings in infrastructure, stating, “We lack sports facilities, and the opportunities in Ilulissat are very poor. When we advocate for leisure activities while facing such limitations, we are effectively contradicting ourselves.”
The mayor’s vision includes an “Airdome,” a concept he and a delegation of officials from the municipality explored during a visit to Finland in February, accompanied by representatives from Greenland’s Football Union, KAK. While he refrained from disclosing specific costs—labeling them as “challenging”—he acknowledged that they are currently evaluating the financial aspects of the project.
“We’re looking into the prices but prefer not to speculate too much publicly, as this can lead to misunderstandings,” Gabrielsen noted. “Given the estimates we have, the costs appear daunting, especially if we factor in seating arrangements—hence our intent to seek further investigation through the municipal council, potentially via our development company, Avannaa Development A/S.”
Notably, funding for the soccer field dome is not accounted for in the municipality’s construction budget for this year or the next, raising questions about its feasibility.
Potential Costs and Community Impact
Inquiries made by Sermitsiaq into the costs associated with Airdomes uncovered that the basic structure and equipment would set the municipality back approximately DKK 12 million. However, constructing a foundation that meets Arctic conditions—and securing it against the challenges of snow and ice—could push the price to around DKK 25 million. If seating is included, the total expenses might rise to as much as DKK 50 million.
Nike Berthelsen, director of development and projects at KAK, indicated that roughly 50 Airdomes are already operational across Finland and more are being established. These structures are designed for longevity, with a lifespan of around 30 years.
Multifunctional Use Beyond Sports
Gabrielsen envisions that the dome could serve multiple purposes beyond just sporting activities. He highlighted the potential for the large space to host trade fairs and exhibitions, suggesting that this could help defray operational costs. “We could dismantle it in the summer and set it back up in the winter,” he explained. “I see significant possibilities for community engagement and economic activity.”
However, while the mayor’s enthusiasm is palpable, the project’s realization hinges on securing majority support from the municipal council. As discussions proceed, the community waits with bated breath to see if this innovative vision will transform their local sports landscape.
