Elite Sport Greenland and Ski Committee Forge New Path for Young Athletes
In a significant move for the development of cross-country skiing, Elite Sport Greenland has partnered with the Ski Committee of the Greenland Ski Association to establish a two-year cooperation agreement. This initiative aims to provide enhanced opportunities for young athletes, enabling them to compete on the international stage.
The agreement’s primary goal is to prepare four promising skiers for prestigious events such as the Junior World Championships, World Championships, and even the Winter Olympics. The collaboration will ensure that these athletes receive targeted training and gain valuable competition experience abroad.
Currently, the four selected athletes—Arika Magnussen, Qunaaq Jensen, Elias Nordahl-Walleuhm, all from Nuuk, and Sasja Joelsen Henriksen from Sisimiut—are studying in Norway. Their development over the next two winter seasons will include rigorous training sessions designed to sharpen their competitive edge.
According to Angutinguaq Hegelund-Tittussen, chairman of Elite Sport Greenland, the agreement represents a vital stepping stone for these young skiers. He emphasized the sport’s demanding nature, which requires continuous training, participation in international competitions, and access to the best training environments. “The cross-country committee has laid out clear plans focusing on nurturing talent for the coming years. We at Elite Sport Greenland are eager to facilitate this collaboration, ensuring our athletes are equipped to excel on the international stage,” he stated in a press release.
The partnership also aims to broaden the athletes’ horizons and provide them with a wealth of international experience. The ultimate aim is for these junior runners to qualify not just for junior competitions but also for the World Championships and the Winter Olympics.
Flemming Enequist, chairman of the Cross-Country Committee at the Ski Association, echoed the importance of this agreement. “We’re grateful for the support from Elite Sport Greenland. This collaboration significantly enhances our talented young athletes’ opportunities for international training and competition—critical elements for their growth,” he noted.
Both parties believe that this agreement will not only foster the development of individual athletes but also elevate the overall competitiveness of Greenlandic skiers in the years to come.
